Install solar PV panels and mounting
This unit covers mounting solar PV panels and arrays safely and to specification on a range of roof and ground structures.
Elements & performance criteria
1. Prepare the mounting structure
- 1.1 Mounting type is selected for the structure and array. [range: A]
- 1.2 Fixings are installed to the manufacturer's specification.
- 1.3 Structure is checked for level and load before panels are fitted.
2. Mount and secure panels
- 2.1 Panels are positioned for orientation and tilt per the design. [range: B]
- 2.2 Panels are secured and torqued to specification.
- 2.3 Array is bonded and earthed correctly.
Range
A. Mounting type: Roof rail; Tile hook; Ground frame; Pole mount
B. Array configuration: Single string; Multi-string; Portrait; Landscape
Evidence guide
Critical aspects: Candidate must mount a compliant, correctly bonded array on more than one occasion, in a real or realistically simulated working environment.
Underpinning knowledge
- Solar irradiance and the effect of orientation and tilt on yield.
- Roof and structural load considerations for arrays.
- Bonding, earthing, and lightning protection principles.
- Manufacturer mounting and torque specifications.
Assessment methods: Observation, Product inspection, Oral questioning
On the job where possible; off-the-job assessment requires a realistic rig. Candidate must have access to tools, fixings, and the relevant specifications.
